Watch the video below…
This project was inevitable from the moment I received the link from DJ Jamad to download Miles Remixed by Apple Juice Kid. I’ve been a fan of Miles Davis since grade school but had never heard him like this. Apple Juice Kid’s remix album allowed me to see things in the sounds and from track one I was daydreaming. After coming across the Perlinger archive I snapped together some cuts and within an hour or so I was rendering the finished product. I gave Apple Juice Kid the first look and got his blessing on it.
What you don’t know is that this project was also an exercise in reframing. The original footage was used as an anti-heroin campaign in the black neighbors. At the time heroin deaths had shot up and the video was a public service announcement aimed at saving some of those that were dying. You’ll notice some signs and statistics within the video that speak to that cause. I knew going in that this couldn’t be about a dude tripping on heroin… that’s not what the song is about. So with every cut I tried to reframe the main character as just a chill dude. Now watch it again.
Technically speaking…
Putting together this video was much like making a mixtape… using found material and creating something new with it. The footage is circa 1969 and had to be rez’d up and then smoothed before use.
