Mars Phoenix : Landed

By

We were excited today to be watching the live stream of the NASA control room when the Mars Phoenix touched down on Mars after flying for 10 months.

It was just like scenes out of your favorite sci fi movie. While a bit off topic, this was particularly exciting for me because I designed the original websites for the Cassini mission to Saturn for JPL/NASA back in 2003. I also used space exploration in the creation of the website for A Tribe Called Quest. But I also love robots and the way they went retro with the landing this time was brill. In the past few missions they’ve used an airbag type approach but the Mars Phoenix used the old school parachute to bring it down on the red planet. Landing was ‘better than perfect’!

If you’re on Twitter you can follow the @Phoenix and get updates on what its doing for the next 90 days.

By the way, the Cassini will fly its last mission past Saturn on May 28th.
